The Modern French Manicure: Every Variation Explained

Ask ten clients for a French manicure and you will get ten different pictures. Naming the variation you want saves time in the chair and avoids the disappointment of a tip that is thicker or softer than you imagined.

Classic French

Sheer pink base, opaque white tip following the smile line. It suits square and squoval shapes best, where the tip has a defined edge to trace. Grows out visibly, so book at two to three weeks.

Micro-French

A hairline tip, usually 1mm or less. Modern, subtle, and it flatters short nails because it does not visually shorten the plate. It requires a steady hand and adds time to the appointment.

Coloured and metallic tips

• Black or chocolate tips for a graphic, editorial look.
• Chrome or gold tips that catch the light without adding colour.
• Pastel tips for spring, or coral and aqua through summer.
• Two-tone tips with a fine outline for something more decorative.

Reverse, double and V-French

Reverse French places the line at the cuticle rather than the tip — striking, but it shows regrowth quickly. Double French adds a second thin line inside the first. V-French draws the smile line to a point in the centre, which elongates the nail and suits almond shapes especially well.

Which grows out best

Micro-French and blended chrome tips grow out most gracefully because the line is thin and the base is sheer. Classic thick white French shows the gap soonest. If you want maximum time between appointments, choose a fine tip on a milky base.
